Go Speed Racer, Go!…

We saw Speed Racer last night. It t’was pretty good. I wouldn’t say it was the best, but yeah… I guess you can’t expect too much from a racing movie. It was somewhat serious, but kept to the friendliness of the original cartoon. There weren’t any sex scenes or anything that similar to the events that ruined the Matrix. I guess it’s a good movie to watch for fun, but if you’re looking for a movie with a great plot and great storyline, then Speed Racer is not for you. Go in there expecting a futuristic racing film.
One of my major nits-to-pick was the fact that they had more than the Mach V. They added a bunch of stuff, which I guess added to the story line, but yeah… It also seemed to be a marketing strategy because when we bought the movie tickets, we got coupons for Speed Racer stuff at Target. They also had information about the soundtrack and some other things. Another nit-to-pick is that some of the clothing wasn’t done too well. Sure the clothing is based on the 60′s, but keeping it looking like quickly sewn together felt doesn’t keep up with the modern settings. I would have gone with some blue silk or something. Keep true to the colors, but it’s not like there’s a set material for the clothing. The Racer family seemed stuck in the past (which aids in the whole anti-major-corporation feeling of the family), but were they at home sewing their clothes from Target fabrics (because Wal-Mart was bought out 5 years prior to the film’s settings) instead of shopping at a modernized JC Penny Macy’s (Macy’s would have bought JCPenny, Khols, and other major clothing distributers with Dillards and Bloomingdales being the only competition left). So the Mach V was supposed to be the car that could handle everything. The designers didn’t stay completely true to that. It saddened me. The wardrobe people needed to work harder in my opinion. Christina Ricci looked good through most of the movie, but Emile Hirsch was odd throughout various scenes. I think they could have done a lot better. But as long as everyone runs over to Target and buys their happy go lucky Speed Racer attire and toys, everyone will be happy
