So I was asked by several people in the past week to find a host that fits what they need. I was really shocked to find out that many of them wanted a host that supports Ruby on Rails and uses cPanel.
This was a bit of a shock to me, at how many people are moving towards Ruby and Rails. But the even bigger shock was people wanted to use cPanel. I can kindof understand this, cPanel seems to be the standard for many hosts, and it’s what most people are used to. Why am I shocked then? I haven’t really had any good personal experiences with cPanel playing well with Ruby or Rails. It may have improved, but I don’t use a cPanel-based host for my Rails hosting needs. Although, I’ve just been playing with rails and have never really deployed anything…
Most cPanel based hosts don’t seem to offer what you need in order to do “Rails Hosting done Right.” Most of the time you need SSH, which is usually harder to get setup on a cPanel based host. cPanel 11 seems to have improved since I last played around in it, but I think there are better control panels out there.
But I’ve been searching, and I can’t really find any definitive place. I like where I’m at, but I don’t like putting all my eggs in one basket. The more I search though, the more it seems like the more popular hosts are the one with high affiliate pay-outs. I’ll admit, I do post referal links because I do like having a portion of my hosting paid for, but it’s not most important aspect of me searching for a host.
I’ll post an update for the Rails host I find for my friends, but it might be a few days.
RSS Atom.
This reminds me of the guilt from your hosting me for free.
I agree though! I particularly chose TyL Hosting because of cPanel, but come to think of it…I hardly ever use it (!).
I like how Go Daddy is famous for domain names alone. What do you think is the equivalent to it when it comes to hosting? (I think I’ve lost track since settling with TyL Hosting.)
Spoken by Kym on February 6th, 2009 at 5:29 amFor hosting, the top 3 names that come to me at the moment are RackSpace (offer tons of different types of hosting, for those who have lots of money), MediaTemple (offering “power house” hosting for a lower price), and DreamHost (because they’re name is soo big, and the hosting is good depending on the server you’re on).
Spoken by TwiRp on February 6th, 2009 at 10:11 amAt least, those are the three I came up with. I’m not too sure of MediaTemple and DreamHost though, but I would have to say that RackSpace is pretty high up on the list.
By the looks of it, RackSpace seems right for commercial websites.
I suppose anything cheaper than the cheapest plan at DreamHost would be too bad?
Spoken by Kym on February 10th, 2009 at 5:22 amI don’t think it would be too bad. It depends on the host. Some know what they’re doing, others are “trying to get rich quick.”
Spoken by TwiRp on February 10th, 2009 at 6:55 amJust be careful and do some research. But if you do do research, remember that those who are happy aren’t as loud as those who are upset. Every host has their ups and downs (and bad moments), but that doesn’t mean they’re terrible.
